Lately, the heat has been very unforgiving in the island. Almost beyond bearable and you can easily end up dehydrated if you don’t take care of yourself. So, I consume more cold drinks lately, especially iced lime tea sweetened with honey and I eat a lot of anything that has cooling effects on my body: pecel, rujak cingur, tipat cantok (all these three are vegetable and fruit based, bathed in peanut sauce), stir-fried vegetables, and salads.
This weekend I got caught in the rain on my way to the city, so I made a visit to the healthy place of Lanny and Olive nearby. Rain or shine, I often drop by their place anyway. They were talking about two of my favorite topics: what to cook and what to eat. Long story short, we cooked menus that could help us eliminate flu and sore throat: bubur kacang hijau (mung bean porridge), watermelon and feta cheese salad, stir-fried mung bean sprouts, omelet, and surpris, tuna belly sashimi! It was a luxury indeed.
Olive got the tuna belly from her friend. The tuna was caught in Maluku waters in the eastern part of Indonesia. She took it from the fridge, thinly sliced it. I helped her grating ginger and garlic and she, along with okonomi sauce, did the magic. The sauce tastes like Worchester sauce but more tangy and a bit more sour.
It did not take long to prepare the menu fast and even took a lesser amount of time to eat it. Sweet Jesus, it was the most delicious tuna belly sashimi I ever had this year. A mixture of cold cuts of tasty delicious oily tuna belly with an explosion of sweet, sour, tangy, salty, umami taste of the sauce and grated spices and the freshness of the sliced scallion…. Heavenly, like it was so appropriate to eat it for lunch in the midday heat.

Tuna Belly Sashimi
- perut tuna, iris tipis/tuna belly, thinly sliced
- bawang putih/garlic, finely grated
- jahe/ginger, finely grated
- bawang prei, iris tipis/scallion, sliced thinly
- Okonomi sauce
Cara membuat/Directions: campurkan semua bumbu dengan irisan ikan, lalu sajikan/Mix well all ingredients and serve!
